being to learn, learning to be

Thank you for taking a moment to experience my work. My name is Madi Foster Person.

I descend from European colonizers and settler-immigrants. I have lived most of my life on unceded Wabanaki territory.  I am currently living on pematiyik  (Mount Desert Island) to study Human Ecology at College of the Atlantic.

Creativity is an outlet I use to process relationships between, land, creatures, people, and self. The stages of making a piece mirror the layers of my experience. They unfold and grow as I do. Brushstrokes are a dance captured on canvas. Colors speak to each other like the dialogue between emotion and thought.  The conversations I have with the trees are recorded on paper. Patterns of forms catch my eye and then I attempt to catch their light. Clay is formed in my hands whilst imagining the formation of earthly life.

I aim to keep experimenting with new ways of making, with the hope of finding a home with my favorite materials.
